Joplin Arts Fest is pleased to announce the return of ceramic artist Linda Ellard Brown to our 10th Anniversary show at the Cornell Complex. Find her colorful work on the Leggett & Platt Green this September 20 & 21.

“I first admired “sgraffito pottery” several years ago. As a clay artist, I was drawn to the positive and negative spaces that could be created. The word “sgraffito” means the cutting or scratching through an outer coating of slip, glaze or englobe to expose the different colored clay body beneath. Sgraffito comes from the Italian word “graffito”, meaning to scratch.

Today my work is very cohesive yet each piece is completely different. I prefer organic patterns such as flowers and leaves but will occasionally add something different such as a bird or koi fish for additional interest. Most of my pieces are wheel thrown and I always pay close attention to the shape and angles that I create, knowing that those surfaces will soon become my canvas to carve on.
It’s nice to discover your gift, but the real joy for me comes in sharing my work with others. I hope you enjoy my work, as much as I have enjoyed creating it!”
